Lolita's Personality

Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can be a distraction to those living near. They can make ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be startled by their noise.
The species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this the only way to identify sex is through DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is known, breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to stop performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.
Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and harming her immune system. They also place her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, pledged to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. The nation's most active activists, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
